What is a solar home system?
A Solar Home System comprises a solar PV generator (typically one PV module), a battery charge controller and a battery (Fig. 2.1 ). These components, as well as the appliances operated by the SHS, are interconnected by the balance-of-system components (cables, switches, plugs and installation material).
What services does a solar home system provide?
Typical energy services demanded by users of solar home systems are monodirectional communication and entertainment by radios, CD players, woofers, by TV and by DVD players, refrigeration for food and beverages. The order of importance may vary from region to region.
What are the advantages of a solar home system?
Another advantage is their nominal voltage of 3.3 V, which allows set-ups within the voltage range of the standard 12-V battery found in Solar Home Systems. When discharging, the voltage drop during the discharge is not as high as for lead–acid batteries [ 20 ]. This again is advantageous for the appliances operated by the SHSs.
Do solar home systems perform well?
Field experience with PV rural electrification has shown that the performance of solar home systems is not always entirely satisfactory.
